What's New?

The following is a list of the major changes to this web over the last few months, with the most recent changes shown first:

11/19/03
After all the excitement about getting a "real" server. I sold it.  I bought a cheap 400 buck Presario to replace it.  The old server was too noisy, took up too much space and used too much electricity.  Most all of my updates are to my BLOG.  Some funny stuff in there, check it out.  Lots of other things have gone down but it is much easier to read the blog than recap it all here.  Will I update this page again?  Who knows? :)

Well it's been a while again. Our summer has been spent doing tons of projects around the house. Maintaining a house with 3 acres of land has proved to be more work than I imagined. For the first time in my life I am actually looking forward to winter. As far as the site goes, it still is out on the commercial ISP. It has been pretty reliable and responsive so I have no complaints so far. The big news is we now have cable access in our area! As soon as my DirecPC contract expired I dumped it and got a cable modem. It is fantastic, super fast, no outages with storms, and no latency, it is fantastic. Best of all it is 25 bucks a month less than satellite! I have not been doing much web development. I redid the sprintblows.com site during the summer and also redesigned my volleyball page I also sold my DirecTivo and purchased a stand alone Tivo. I then threw a bigger hard drive in it as well as a network card. Now my Tivo updates over the internet. My computer gaming lately has been mostly Warcraft 3 and Counter Strike. I have gone through a bunch of FPS games in single player mode in the past year. I am hoping to be able to get a new puter for myself sometime in the next 6 months. Hopefully I will get a fresh update in here before then. ;)

I have finished the migration.  My home server is no longer serving any duf.net pages.  I also migrated, sprintblows.com, fragu.com, blackpheasant.com, cloudparty.com, automatedproductionassoc.com, and dufworld content all to the commercial space.  The ISP had a hiccup this week that took me offline for almost a day, but other than that it seems to be working pretty well.  Hacking off my 2nd phone line, dial up ISP and the DUFWORLD hosting package saved me 60 or 70 per month.  I also hacked down my directv package by 30 bucks a month.  Can you tell I am trying to save some money? :)

HAHAHA. 2 years between entries.  Damn it I'm pathetic.  Well since my last entry I have moved to Florida, built a house and changed hardware and connections several times over.  One thing that had been constant over the years was the duf.net site was always hosted on a server sitting wherever I lived at the time.  Well This past week I moved duf.net and all of my other registered sites (fragu.com, sprintblows.com, cloudparty.com, blackpheasant.com, & dufworld.com) to commercial web space.  Where I live now I was relegated to using a dedicated dial up for the server which just sucks.  Plus consolidating my sites actually will save me in the neighborhood of 75 bucks a month.  Also, the sites are now sitting on a lightning fast internet connection so response time will be fantastic.    Yea I know who really cares.  Well not many, but those who do will appreciate it.  I will keep my server running for my in-house network but it's days of having it's ass hanging out in the wind of the net are done. Anyone looking for a duf.net email address can have one absolutely free.  Just give me a holler.  I am hosting with liquidweb.com.  I recommend them.  It was the best deal I had seen.  From looking at the site you would think that I hardly touch it.  Actually I do little tweaks here and there on a semi regular basis.  Over the past years I have spent more time working on sites for other people.  I have played with flash, set up a perl message board and have done a decent amount of work playing with graphics.  So I'm still here,  I just have to remember to pop in here more often to give a heads up. Cya in less than 2 years I hope. ;)

Y2k came and went without much bite thank goodness.  I got my cable modem. It rocks.  I have been slowly moving sites OFF of my server to other free sites in preparation for my relocation to sunny FLA. I recommend tripod.com for all of your free hosting needs. Once I move I will be putting the server back online but the timetable for that is uncertain.  The server keeps chugging along.  I have some new hardware that I could move it to but if I do that I may just load up Windows 2000 advanced server to see how it goes.  My site still has numerous hack attempts on it daily.  Lamers.  I just completed my Novell CNE cert although with the way Microsoft is steamrolling Novell right now I kinda wonder why I bothered.  Looks good on paper I guess.  I currently have 3 sites I actively author. www.duf.net (and all of it's little sub-webs) www.fragu.com and www.sportsvolleyball.com  The sports volleyball site is by far the busiest, averaging between 100-200 hits per week.
10/10/99
The webserver and myself were physically relocates in late July.  This is a interim move until I relocate to southern Florida mid-2000.  It can't come soon enough.  I've installed some network monitoring software on my server and have been surprised to see how much hacking is being attempted on my server. Spamming, port scans, attempted back orifice attacks.... I would think there would be better targets than my home server with a dial-up connection. :)  I am in the middle of getting a cable modem for my workstation (ISP frowns on putting a server on their service)  That should ROCK!!!!  I registered a new domain name. www.fragu.com  This is my handle in many online gaming forums so I made a site to go with it.  This site is in a partial state as I haven't spent as much time as I would like finishing it.

Wow has it really been this long since I have updated this page?  Well I have been rather busy over the last few months. I got married in October, then the holidays etc. etc.  The site itself has not changed much, however I did just do a minor update to the cosmetics.  There is more activity on some of my sub sites (cloudparty.duf.net and sportsvb.duf.net then on my main site)  You may notice that I have taken off the option to "join" my site.  With the advent of so many free services on the web it seemed rather pointless to continue to offer this service on my limited bandwidth connection.  I even found a place on the web that offers totally free internet service!  I hope to spend more time updating the site, I have been dabbling with some more java apps and even some flash macromedia stuff but I never seem to be able to spend as much time as I would like. Those annoying things like having to go to work keep getting in the way. :)
7/15/98
I have begun integrating the new web server. It is a Pentium 200 with 4 gig of drive space and 128 meg of RAM! I will be reloading everything from scratch and then copying back over the web content. I am hoping I can learn from my mistakes of the first server and make this new one hum. I hope to have the new server online before the end of the month.  If there are any problems with your account after the switch please email me with any problems.

Well the redesign is pretty much finished. Did most of it over 4th of July weekend. I think it looks nice. I plan to integrate some more Java stuff created with some fantastic Java tools made by Riada. I am working on a way to perform my hardware upgrade with minimal expense on my part as well as minimal hassle. I want to convert the web server over to a faster Intel Pentium chip and convert the storage subsystem to SCSI. These additions should really help the server handle all the demands I put on it. Running a server as a Primary Domain Controller, DNS Server, Exchange server, Proxy Server and IIS4 web server is definitely not recommended. :)

Once again it seems I have not updated this much lately. Summer time is a busy time for me. I play alot of volleyball and try to keep active. I just got back from a week long vacation at the beach. Ok most of my web work has been on some of the internal sites like Sports volleyball and my own volleyball web site. http://vball.duf.net  Things in the works..... I have wanted to sit down and do some redesign of the site to freshen things up for awhile (see May's news) but have not had the time to do so. I would like to start working on it this week and having something new in place by next week. I also am looking at doing some hardware upgrades to the server. However doing these will result in alot of time on my part so they may take awhile to get done. I would like to increase the hard drive space and convert the web server over to a SCSI drive setup for a speed increase. However doing so would mean a total reinstallation of alot of software. Well that's it for now and happy summer!

Hmm I haven't gotten a chance to update this lately, sorry bout that. The Sports VB site is really taking off. Alot of good info and it is receiving a steady amount of hits. Similar results have been seen with the Cloud Party site! Nothing much has happened with the web server. It has been pretty stable. I added Microsoft Proxy Server to it so it serves as my outgoing connection to the net as well. I was recently in Naples, Florida and got a chance to see AVP tourney, which was a blast. I also got my picture taken with Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson, look for the pic online soon! I hope to soon do a facelift to at least the main page. The java buttons and banners are cool but it seems too many browsers throw up on them or they take too long to load.
3/23/98
I just had surgery Friday to have a varicose vein removed from my leg so I am off of work for a few days.  This should give me a good opportunity to work on the site.   Added a new site to Duf's Web. Sports Volleyball - sportsvb.duf.net Sports Volleyball is an organization based out of the Lancaster area that runs volleyball tournaments all year round.  The prize format is cool because instead of giving you the standard t-shirt or volleyball as prizes, you can win Spike-Nashbar gift certificates that allow you to buy merchandise out of their catalog.  I am also adding a page about Creatine, a performance supplement that I have been taking for the past month or so, the results were very interesting. Rich's web site and the CloudParty site are getting more and more content.
2/20/98
Sorry no big updates lately.  I have been busy playing games and I was out of the area for a week. I also picked up a cd burner so I have been playing with that.  In the next few days I will try to add some good content.  The Cloud Party site is coming into shape.  Also click here to see some interesting artwork.   Are you into South Park?  Then go to our South Park site!
1/16/98
Well the New Year is here.  Had a good holiday, how about you?  Working on getting Exchange 5.5 online.  Have been playing with Microsoft Proxy server 2.0.   Cool little product allows my girlfriend and I to share the same internet connection.  Have played more with Front Page 98.  It really is a terrific product that allows really nice pages with minimal effort.  So what is in store for Duf's Web this year?  Well I hope to find some spare bucks to get a better server.   I would also like to get a faster bandwidth connection however to do so would require some clients that actually paid. :)  So we will see how it goes.  I am a little disappointed that I haven't gotten more responses to my free web space offer.
12/29/97
I hope you had a great Christmas and wish you an upcoming Happy New Year!  I have been a little busy over the the past 2 weeks so there hasn't been much going on right now.   Added some new favorites to my links list.  Anyone ever play You Don't Know Jack?  It is a popular trivia game that I hadn't got a chance to try until recently.   It is definitely recommended! Very well done game.  I am now authoring the site with Front Page 98 which should give me the ability to spice things up a bit.
12/14/97
We have had more downtime this week for at least the duf.net domain. My name server's router died so it made the duf.net domain inaccessible for a couple days. However if that ever happens there is always the option of using my other active domain name - duf.dyndns.com
12/9/97
More virtual domains...quake.duf.net and cloudparty.duf.net I installed the official release version of IIS4.0 along with FP 98 server extensions. I also added a ton of volleyball action shots in the volleyball area.
12/2/97
I have set up several more virtual domains. Check these out, cloudparty.duf.net, torrin.duf.net and wc.duf.net. If you click on the Quake Q on the main page you will enter the FRAG ZONE. In there are links to an online database of our Quake conquests. Pretty cool! Look for more database integration. I also hope to have an updated (meaning faster and bigger) server running the site sometime early next year. Added more tips to the volleyball section.
11/24/97
The web server is now UPS protected. I put on IIS 4.0 beta 3. This has a ton of cool features. The one I like is virtual hosting where I can redirect an IP name request to a sub directory or another web based on the URL. For example, try these three : ali.duf.net | jp.duf.net | 3m.duf.net I can make anyone a "virtual domain" off of me meaning you could have a domain name of yourname.duf.net
11/12/97
Added my personal page to the personal pages directory. My sister is working on a great informative site for the women's commission. Look under the personal pages for Torrin and then follow the link from there.
11/07/97
Big NEWS. Duf's WEB is now a "REAL" domain. Meaning I registered with Internic. You can still use duf.dyndns.com but our new domain name is DUF.NET. Try it out today! The best thing is I managed to find a way to do this whole deal for only the Internic charge.
11/1/97
Implemented a form to email CGI program that allows online applications to join Duf's Web. Online comment form now is delivered to me via email. ( A much more desirable method)
10/20/97
Started work on Electronic Gaming page. Changed online Access example to not have my sister's address. (per her request :)
10/17/97
Have been very busy lately. I crammed in my last 2 Microsoft tests in about 2 weeks to complete my MCSE (thank goodness) I also have been out of town quite a bit the last 2 weeks that has taken time away from working on my web project.

Created this page to update changes both present and future occurring on Duf Web

Going to try to dedicate more time to working on the site (less time playing Warcraft 2 as hard as that may be!) and learning how to better integrate things like Database connectivity and Active X

Revised: July 06, 1998.
